The Sauúti Collective has had the pleasure of being invited to many inspiring, where we’ve spoken about the Sauútiverse, the projects we have on the go, and how more people can get involved in creating Afrocentric work in our shared-world.

2024

2024 Nommo Awards, Glasgow WorldCon

August 10th, 2024:

Sauúti member Stephen Embleton’s Mothersound novella, “Undulation“, was announced as the winner of the 2024 Nommo Award for Best Speculative Fiction Novella by an African.
Also announced at Glasgow WorldCon on 10 August 2024, at the 7th Nommo Awards was fellow Sauúti member, Wole Talabi’s win in the Ilube Novel category for his debut novel “Shigdi and the Brass Head of Obalufon”. It was an overall excellent convention with other Sauúti’s in attendance.

2023

Africa Writes: May 12th, 2023

On October 1st, 2023, Stephen Embleton chaired a Sauútiverse panel discussion with Jude Umeh, Wole Talabi and Cheryl S. Ntumy at Africa Writes, a literary festival hosted by the Royal African Society and held in London, United Kingdom. The panel was titled “Welcome to the Sauútiverse” and introduced UK readers to the shared world.

FinnCon: July 9th, 2023

On July 9th, 2023, Xan van Rooyen gave a presentation on collective worldbuilding at the annual SFF convention, FinnCon, held in Tampere, Finland. The talk, titled “Collective World-building – Writing Doesn’t Always Have to be a Solitary Pursuit” focused on how writers can come together to create a shared world, with the Sauútiverse as a reference.

ORIAS UC Berkeley Speculative Fiction Programme: June 22nd, 2023

On June 22nd, 2023, Syllble founder Fabrice Guerrier led a collective worldbuilding workshop hosted by the University of California Berkeley’s Office of Resources for International and Area Studies (ORIAS) and virtually co-facilitated by Eye Kay Nwaogu and Cheryl S. Ntumy. The workshop was part of a speculative fiction summer institute programme for teachers, titled “The World as it Could Be.”

Nebula Conference: May 12th, 2023

On May 12th, 2023, Wole Talabi moderated a virtual panel with Eugen Bacon, Xan van Rooyen, Stephen Embleton and Jude Umeh, titled “Sauúti: An Afro-centric Universe”. The conference, a precursor to the annual Nebula Awards, gave the Collective an opportunity to introduce the Sauútiverse to the global SFF community in preparation for the November launch of the first Sauútiverse anthology, Mothersound.

2022

Aké Arts and Book Festival: November 25th, 2022

On November 25th 2022, Wole Talabi moderated a discussion on the Sauútiverse with Dare Segun Falowo, Stephen Embleton and Cheryl S. Ntumy at the 2022 Ake Festival in Lagos, Nigeria. The festival theme for the year was “Homecoming,” a fitting backdrop for introducing an Afrocentric shared world on African soil.
